Suburgatory Proves to Be No Ratings Limbo

Suburgatory scared up 9.81 million souls, according to preliminary Nielsen info. The new ABC sitcom at 8:30/7:30c grabbed a 3.3 rating among 18-to-49-year-olds, marking a 27 percent improvement over last year’s tenant of the time slot, Better With You. The comedy, starring Jane Levy and Jeremy Sisto, follows The Middle, which was down to 8.55 million from last week’s 9.35 million. Similarly, most of Wednesday’s ratings were lower than last week, though to varying degrees.

This is amazing! Hope people will tune in every week like they did this week! Suburgatory is an amazing show!

Levy makes you want to stay in ‘Suburgatory’

Any show that mocks suburbia warrants at least one viewing. “Suburgatory” (7:30 p.m. Wednesday, ABC; 2.5 stars) wrings so many laughs from the oft-maligned wasteland you’re likely to come back for more.

“It’s like the Million Mom March,” 16-year-old Tessa Altman says. “They’re shuffling out of the tanning salons in their mani-pedi flip-flops, with their ever-present daughters and enormous frozen coffee drinks.”

Tessa (Jane Levy) has no one to blame but herself. After finding condoms in her drawer, Tessa’s dad George (Jeremy Sisto) upends her life by uprooting her from Manhattan and moving to the mythical town of Chatswin. There she meets her worst nightmare, pretty high school mean girl Dalia Royce (Carly Chaikin), who likes to wear girly, skimpy clothes that her too-perky (in attitude and breast augmentation) mom, Dallas (Cheryl Hines from “Curb Your Enthusiasm”), helps her pick out.

She also loathes her dad’s pal, Noah Werner (Alan Tudyk) and her nosy neighbor Sheila Shay (Ana Gasteyer), but has a soft spot for Sheila’s daughter, Lisa (Allie Grant from “Weeds”), an unpopular fellow student who is the main target of Dalia and her pals.

Suburgatory Will Not Offend Suburbanites

It’s an understandable New York City teen’s fear. Her dad moves her from the bustling city to a world of eternally youthful mothers, huge SUVs, trimmed lawns, and gossiping neighbors. That’s the set up for ABC’s new comedy series, Suburgatory, which premieres Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. Jane Levy (who played Mandy on Showtime’s Shameless) stars as 16-year-old Tessa, a city girl whose fear becomes realized when her single father (George, played by Jeremy Sisto) decides to move her to the suburbs for a “better life.”

Levy, a product of Northern Calif. suburbs herself, says she doesn’t think suburban dwellers will take offense at the show’s take on the lifestyle.

“I think people are going to say, ‘Oh, that’s my neighbor.’ They’re not going to admit it’s them, because they’d never be able to,” Levy, 21, tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m from the suburbs and where I’m from didn’t necessarily have people like you see in Suburgatory, but along those lines and I think people will laugh at themselves. And it’s lighthearted.“

Levy recently gave THR a preview of what to expect from her character and the new ABC series. Read below!
